The Lowen and Loan families of Virginia all descended from John and Susan Lowen/Loan, who moved into Bath County, VA. between 1810 and 1820. John died in 1829, leaving six children: Samuel, John, Lewis, Benjamin, Rachel, and Thompson. The difference in spelling goes back to the earliest records, and continues today, with some families using Loan and others Lowen. The original spelling of the name, and the origin of John Lowen/Loan prior to moving to Bath County, VA. has not been determined.
